After just one year with the University of Regina Rams, head coach Mike Gibson is leaving.
The team announced on Sunday afternoon that Gibson will resign at the end of the month. He’s leaving to be the new line coach and run game coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos. This will be the sixth CFL team Gibson has worked with, including the Riders.
In a news release, Dan Johnston, president of the Rams, thanked Gibson for his work.
“In his short time with the organization, Coach Gibson had a positive impact on our program in the areas of player recruitment, academic excellence, and strengthening the partnership with the university.”
There was excitement from the team when Gibson was first announced as head coach, back in December 2014.
“Mike is an impressive and energetic person who is passionate about coaching football and has great coaching experiences both in the NCAA and the CFL. We all feel very fortunate that Mike has come to the University of Regina Rams to lead our young men,” wrote then-team president Dean Picton in a news release.
The announcement lauded Gibson’s “extensive” experience with teams at both the professional and university levels.
Gibson’s only season with the Rams was a disappointing one though, ending with an 0-8 record.
The Rams will now begin a national search for Gibson’s replacement.
