Vigil for Eagles' co-founder Glenn Frey on the corner of Winslow, Arizona

One of the places hit hardest by the news of the death of Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, is Winslow, Arizona.

Yes, the same Winslow, Arizona Frey sang about in the hit “Take It Easy”.

“Fortunately, if it weren’t for Glenn and The Eagles and their song, you know our poor little town may have been forgotten and dropped off the map. That’s kind of been our claim to fame,” said Stephanie Lugo, who is part of the Standin’ on the Corner Foundation in Winslow.

In a phone interview with News Talk Radio, Lugo explained that both the foundation and a park were created to pay tribute to the iconic song, with Frey himself donating money towards the park’s construction.

It has sure paid off for the small city of just under 10,000 people. Lugo estimated the famous corner attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year including many Canadians.

The site features a bronze statue, a mural and a number of bricks people can purchase and write special messages on. Hundreds of tourists stop by every day, taking in not only the corner – but also nearby shops and restaurants.

This September will also mark the 17th annual Standin’ on the Corner Festival, a two-day event featuring live bands.

“It was an integral part in revitalizing Winslow, it really was,” Lugo said of the song.

Eagles fans have already laid flowers and candles at the park. The music of the Eagles will be played at a vigil planned for Tuesday evening.

Lugo outlined how the foundation is in the midst of trying to plan a long-term tribute to the legendary musician in the park.
