Police say there’s no indication of anything criminal after a fatal fire in northwest Regina last week.
Regina fire crews were called to Markwell Drive in the early hours of Jan. 22. A 48-year-old man was pulled from the duplex but died on scene.
On Thursday, the Regina Police Service said it has released the scene, but continues to investigate. The office of the chief coroner is leading the investigation into the man’s death.
Regina Fire & Protective Services says the fire started in the kitchen of the home, but it wasn’t caused by careless cooking. It also wasn’t sparked by anything electrical.
A release from the fire service says “careless use of smoker’s material cannot be ruled out as the credible source of ignition”.
The home is considered to be a total loss.
Anyone with information on the fire is asked to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
