$17,000 stolen from public coffers in Sask. between 2010 and 2015

About $17,000 was found to have been stolen from public coffers between 2010 and 2015.

The thefts were discovered in the last three months of 2015.

An estimated $4,300 was stolen from the Ministry of Highways. A release from the government states that between 2012 and 2015 an employee stole government assets and supplies and used ministry assets for personal gain. The employee ended up resigning and the matter was reported to police.
 
Between 2010 and 2012, an agent of the Fines Options Program wrote off fines equivalent to about 650 hours of work in lieu of payment of the fines. The government said the theft amounts to $6,021. As a result of incident, the contract with the agent and the Ministry of Justice was suspended. The agent was convicted of fraud charges in October, and the government received restitution.

In August of last year, the government reassessed a loss that was detailed in the previous quarter, of a contract employee using a government credit card to make unlawful purchases. The loss was originally estimated to be $1,142, but  was revised to $5,924 in the third quarter.
 
From May 2014 to November 2015, the government says a SaskTel employee was stealing internet access. The employee was allegedly illegally connecting to SaskTel’s network and losses for the Crown were the equivalent of $759.24. The employee was fired and the theft was reported to police. As a result of this, SaskTel said it will now be doing audits of network test ports at random intervals.
 
The provincial government tables loss reports at the end of every three-month quarter for the fiscal year.
