Land preparation begins for Regina's new Connaught school

There is finally some work to be seen at the old École Connaught Community School in the Cathedral neighbourhood.

Early-stage preparation of the land has begun, although nothing official has been announced by Regina Public Schools. A spokesperson for the school division says no date has been set for a groundbreaking ceremony, though it is expected that a sod-turning ceremony will be held in the near future.

The land at the southwest corner of 13th Avenue and Elphinstone Street has sat empty since Connaught was knocked down in September 2014. A new school is slated to be built on the site in time for the 2017/18 school year.

The 102-year old Connaught closed its doors in June 2014 after a battle by community and heritage groups.

An engineer’s report revealed structural issues that were too costly to repair. Regina Public Schools opted to build new.

Students have been attending school at the former Wascana School on 4th Avenue until the new Connaught is complete.
