87-year-old Regina woman remembers romantic Valentine

“Valentine’s Day is for lovers,” according to Gerta Smith, but it’s not just for the young.
 
Gerta is 87 years old, and lives at the Renaissance Retirement Residence in Regina.
 
She and her husband, Ed, were married for 56 years before he passed away 11 years ago. Even so, Gerta was more than willing to talk about how much they loved Valentine’s Day.
 
“He picked the most romantic cards out. I don’t know, every time he just always had such a romantic card,” she remembered with a smile and a laugh. “I have still boxes of cards, they’re (too) nice to get rid of.”
 
She said Ed was always very romantic, and would bring her chocolates and flowers.
 
Gerta still celebrates Valentine’s Day, but now she spends it with her children.
