Weyburn company building bleachers for new Mosaic Stadium

The oil patch might be falling on hard times, but one Weyburn company is doing big business with the new Mosaic Stadium.

Luk Bell is part owner of Souris Valley Industries along with his parents and two brothers. The family bought the concrete manufacturing company 12 years ago.  Last year they were all on vacation together when they got the call saying they won the contract with PCL Construction to build 1,000 concrete bleachers and 500 walls for the new Mosaic Stadium.

“It’s a little surreal. I mean, when you tell people that you’re building a football stadium, that you’re doing some of the work there, it’s really cool, especially in our specific portion of it, because with what we do, you’ll see it,” Bell said.

“You’ll walk by it, you’ll walk through it, you’ll walk on top of it. When I go to a football game I probably won’t even pay attention to the game,” he said laughing. “Just kidding, I’m actually a really big Rider fan.”

Bell admits it was a bit of a learning curve at first to build the concrete bleachers that the seats will be attached to, but the company quickly caught on and ramped production after hiring extra workers.

“We actually got ahead of schedule and as far as the first portion of the job, the walls are built – production and shipping is actually just wrapping up,” Bell explained.

He says the local company was also happy to be able to hire more workers at a time when the oil industry is suffering.
