Refugee resettlement program sees 1,094 Syrians arrive in Saskatchewan

The last of the 25,000 Syrians the Liberal government committed to welcoming in its refugee resettlement program arrived in Canada on the weekend. Now, Saskatchewan has a tally of how many of the refugees have settled in the province.

The province has welcomed 1,094 Syrian refugees since the program launched in November. Of those, 447 have settled in Regina, 439 in Saskatoon, 113 in Moose Jaw, 87 in Prince Albert and eight in Lumsden.

Of the 25,000 Syrian refugees now in the country, more than 14,300 were assisted by the government while 8,500 were sponsored privately.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, an estimated 4.7 million Syrians have registered as refugees. The UN has asked countries to absorb 10 per cent of those refugees; only Germany has formally welcomed more refugees than Canada.
