The Huskies men’s hockey team won its 16th Canada West banner with a 3-2 Saturday night win over the Alberta Golden Bears at Rutherford Rink. The “Hockey Dogs” won the best-of-three series, two games to none.
Trailing 1-0 early in the third, Jesse Ross and Logan McVeigh scored goals 15 seconds apart to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Levi Cable made it a 3-1 game before the Bears scored with just seven seconds remaining.
It’s the second Canada West title in four years for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Both the Bears and Huskies advance to the University Cup which is set for Halifax from March 17 to 20.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Huskies women’s basketball team swept UBC in two straight games in a Canada West quarterfinal series at the PAC on the weekend by scores of 77-56 and 75-68.
The U of S will now host the Canada West final four on March 11 and 12. The MacEwan Griffins will face the Regina Cougars at in the first semi-final at 5 p.m. on Friday night, then at 7 p.m. the Huskies go against the Alberta Golden Bears.
The winners meet in the Canada West final on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
In Edmonton, the Huskies men’s volleyball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-0 on Friday in a Canada West final four semi-final, and in doing so qualified for the CIS National Tournament March 10th to 12th in Hamilton.
The Huskies are seeded fifth for nationals and will face UNB in their opening match on Thursday. Trinity Western beat the Huskies 3-1 in the Canada West final.
