With several days of record-breaking warm weather in southern Saskatchewan, some people might be thinking that winter won’t be making another appearance after all – but they need to think again.
Saturday broke a warm weather record for the third day in a row – hitting 13.4 C, breaking the record of 11.3 C set in 1992.
Dan Fulton is with Environment Canada. He said this week is going to start getting cold as a front that’s been hanging out up north moves down.
“The upper flow changes so that the mild pacific air that had been flooding over the prairies kind of shuts off and the cold arctic air comes in again.”
Fulton said temperatures will fall to the normal for this time of year, which is around zero. He also called for rain on Tuesday that turns into snow on Wednesday.
“This is the time of year when you’ve got the super warm air, and still the cold arctic air there, you can end up getting some significant snowfall.”
Fulton said that despite some cold snaps here and there, it hasn’t been much of winter, but…
“Mother nature will remind you and the prairies, especially in March, that you can’t take the warm temperatures for granted.”
The good news is, even if the snow does fly this week, it won’t have very long to stick around before spring really does arrive.
