March warmth comes to an end in Sask.

With several days of record-breaking warm weather in Saskatchewan, some people might be thinking winter won’t make another appearance, but they need to think again.

On Sunday, warm weather records were broken in Regina, Broadview, La Ronge, Watrous and Wynard. Saskatoon missed setting a record over the weekend, but has one last chance Monday before the weather turns cold. The expected high of 8 C will approach the record of 8.3 C set in 1927.

Dan Fulton with Environment Canada said this week is going to start getting cold because a front hanging out up north will begin to move south.

“The upper flow changes so that the mild pacific air that had been flooding over the prairies kind of shuts off and the cold arctic air comes in again,” he said.

Fulton said temperatures will fall to the normal for this time of year, which is around zero. He also called for snow two to four centimetres of snow Tuesday and more flurries Wednesday.

“This is the time of year when you’ve got the super warm air, and still the cold arctic air there, you can end up getting some significant snowfall.”

Fulton said despite some cold snaps here and there, it hasn’t been much of winter.

“Mother nature will remind you and the prairies, especially in March, that you can’t take the warm temperatures for granted.”

The good news is even if the snow does fly this week, it won’t have very long to stick around before spring really does arrive.
