Moose Jaw police are looking into complaints about damaged election signs.
One photo circulating on social media shows a large campaign sign for Sask. Party MLA Warren Michelson torn and ripped from its wooden posts.
Insp. Rick McKenna with the Moose Jaw Police Service said one complaints pertains to that particular sign.
“Where a citizen in Moose Jaw actually witnessed two people leaving the scene of a sign that had been damaged,” McKenna said.
In that case, the witness told police they saw two men leaving in a blue SUV. McKenna said officers got another call about damaged signs along the same stretch of Thatcher Drive, but he couldn’t say what candidate or party they involved.
“We live in a free and democratic society and we expect civility from people,” McKenna said. “Although this may seem trivial to some people, it actually isn’t, and we do take these things seriously and we’ll investigate.”
He said people who destroy election signs can face criminal charges including public mischief and vandalism. Anyone with information about damaged signs is asked to call the Moose Jaw Police Service at 306-694-7600.
