Saskatoon proved it still bleeds Sask. Party green.
The city doled out its support, re-electing all of the popular party’s incumbents to aid a historic third-consecutive majority win Monday night.
Notably the biggest victory – and disappointment – of the evening took place in the Saskatoon Westview constituency.
Incumbent, and provincial NDP leader, Cam Broten fell to the Sask. Party’s David Buckingham by 123 votes.
New Democrats did manage to retain three other seats in the city.
Voters in Saskatoon Nutana re-elected Cathy Sproule, while Saskatoon Centre chose longtime MLA David Forbes. Danielle Cartier also held her seat in Saskatoon Riversdale.
But incumbents truly reigned supreme for the Sask. Party.
Ken Cheveldayoff was re-elected to his new constituency of Saskatoon Willowgrove, formerly Saskatoon Silver Springs.
In the newly-created constituency of Saskatoon Stonebridge-Dakota, voters chose Brownwyn Eyre.
The Sask. Party also claimed the newly redrawn Saskatoon Churchill-Wildwood constituency. With no incumbent, Lisa Lambert, a longtime catholic school board trustee, bested New Democrat Tanya Dunn Pierce for the seat.
Saskatoon Fairview proved to another close race for incumbent Jennifer Campeau. The Sask. Party MLA beat out New Democrat Victoria Mowat by less than 200 votes – a margin similar to four years ago, when Campeau narrowly beat out NDP incumbent Andy Iwanchuk.
Name recognition proved fruitful in a tight race for another newly-distributed constituency.
Eric Olauson, a well-known city councillor, beat out New Democrat Jennifer Bowes for the Saskatoon University constituency by little more than 300 votes.
