Student vote also gives Sask. Party a majority

Two weeks before election day, future Saskatchewan voters had the chance to learn about democracy by participating in a mock student vote.

Elementary and high school students across the province elected a Saskatchewan Party majority government. If it were up to pre-teenagers and teenagers, the Sask. Party would have lost one seat for a total of 48 seats in the legislature, and the NDP would have added four seats for a total of 13.

The breakdown of the popular vote from the mock election had the Sask. Party at 53.4 per cent and the NDP at 22.66 per cent. The Green Party picked up 11 per cent of the student vote with the Liberals close behind at 10.8 per cent.

Student voters had a few surprises in store in ridings that were expected to be tight races in the real election.

• Students elected Ted Jaleta for the NDP to represent Regina Coronation Park at 34.4 per cent with the Sask. Party’s Mark Docherty trailing at 27.6 per cent.
• Regina Douglas Park went to the Sask. Party’s CJ Katz with 36.3 per cent, while 26.7 per cent of students voted for Green Party leader Victor Lau and the NDP only getting 19 per cent.
• School board trustee Carla Beck won by a landslide with 55 per cent in Regina Lakeview for the NDP while Dan Cooper got 22 per cent for the Sask. Party.
• Saskatoon Churchill-Wildwood went to Lisa Lambert for the Sask. Party with 55 per cent of the vote.
• Students also re-elected Jennifer Campeau for the Sask. Party to represent Saskatoon Fairview with 40 per cent of the vote.
• Saskatoon University went to the Sask. Party’s Eric Olauson with 33 per cent, with the NDP trailing at 28.5 per cent.
• The Cumberland riding went back to the NDP’s Doyle Vermette with 35.8 per cent.
• Greg Lawrence picked up a win for the Sask. Party, according to students voting in the Moose Jaw Wakamow riding, with 41.7 per cent while the NDP got 31.7 per cent.
• Moose Jaw North students voted in Sask. Party incumbent Warren Michelson by a significant margin at 60.7 per cent while the NDP candidate had 24.2 per cent.
• Prince Albert Carlton went to Joe Hargrave with the Sask. Party at 49 per cent of the vote, while the NDP’s Shayne Lazarowich got 28 per cent.
• Prince Albert Northcote swung to the NDP’s Nicole Rancourt with 36.9 per cent. But the other three parties were close to a tie for student voters with the Liberal Party getting 22 per cent the Green Party getting 21.4 per cent and the Sask. Party only getting 19.4 per cent.
