Fire out at Shercom, province to begin investigation

The fire is finally out at a rubber recycling plant just north of Saskatoon.

Two buildings at Shercom Industries were destroyed by a fire that began Monday night.

Firefighters were able to save a third building, and by Wednesday afternoon only one crew remained on scene to douse any remaining hot spots.

A spokesperson with the Saskatoon Fire Department confirmed the site was turned back over to Shercom as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.
 
At its height, the blaze saw as many as 30 firefighters working at once, rotating out every few hours.

Reflecting on the incident, assistant fire chief Dave Bykowy said it ranks among the largest fires the department has had to deal with.

“It’s definitely up there,” he said.

“I can think of when the roof on Kelsey burned off, that took an immense amount of resources. We had that Canadian Tire fire not too long ago, that took a lot of resources. But this was big; this was right up there.”  

Members of the Saskatoon, Warman and Martensville fire departments were involved in the efforts.

Bykowy said ministry of environment officials have given the all-clear as far as air quality is concerned.

The province will now begin its investigation into the cause of the fire.
