A young Moose Jaw man who pleaded guilty to impaired driving has been sentenced to four years in prison for a crash that killed three of his friends.
Jesse David Taylor entered the plea last month in Moose Jaw court. The Crown and defence then filed a joint submission for a four-year prison sentence, followed by a five-year driving ban.
The deadly crash happened on Sept. 15, 2013. Court heard that Taylor and five of his friends were travelling from Mossbank back to Moose Jaw after a day of fishing, drinking and partying. Taylor was behind the wheel when the truck lost control and rolled several times, four people who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown from the vehicle.
Josh Patterson, Jason Friesen and Justin Kowalski were killed in the crash. Cody Johnson suffered severe head trauma and spent months in a coma. He continues to recover.
Taylor and Travis Shendel were the only two in the vehicle to wear seatbelts, and both avoided major injuries.
Police say Taylor had a blood alcohol content over .08 at the time of the crash.
Justice L.M. Schwann upheld the joint submission entered by the Crown and the defence. Taylor received a sentence of four years for drunk driving causing death, and 18-months for drunk driving causing bodily harm. He will serve the two sentences concurrently.
