Wotherspoon not rushing to decision about Sask. NDP leadership

No sooner had Cam Broten made a decision about his future, the question began about who would replace him.

The NDP suffered a crushing defeat in the provincial election with the party’s leader losing his seat for the second time in a row.

Trent Wotherspoon ran unsuccessfully against Broten in the 2013 leadership race.

When asked whether he would go for a second try, the Regina Rosemont MLA is isn’t rushing his decision.

“Personally, I am not going to be rushing anything on that front,” Wotherspoon said. “The most important discussion is the one as a family and figuring our how best you can serve.”

Wotherspoon will be part of the discussion surrounding the selection of the interim leader. The 10-member caucus he is part of meets with the provincial council on April 23 when the decision will be made.

After that, Wotherspoon maintains the NDP must turn its attention to the now-bigger government caucus and its upcoming throne speech and budget.

“I will be a full partner along with the rest of the caucus team to do the work that the Saskatchewan people have asked us to do.”

Wotherspoon admits the NDP has to once again look at why it was so resoundingly defeated, but adds there is time for both he and the party to look to the future.

“Certainly we have a lot of work to do, how one fits in to that respective work and what role one would provide, I mean that’s the type of thoughts and considerations we will have moving forward.”
