One Regina councillor is hoping to make school zones safer.
Mike O’Donnell calls the number of tickets being handed out to speeders “frightening”.
Tens of thousands of tickets have been handed out to drivers going above the 40 km/h speed limit in the five school zones where photo radar cameras can be found in one year alone.
O’Donnell suspects it is a similar situation in every other school zone.
I have had a lot of calls over the years from every one of the schools in the area I represent about speed, parking, about having a safe street,” he said. “You would assume everyone would slow down in a school zone just because.”
O’Donnell will bring a motion to next week’s council meeting to see if a committee made up of the city, police and school boards can look into this.
He wants a review of current speed, signage, parking and crosswalks to make school zones safer.
