The number of licence plate thefts in Regina appears to be increasing at a staggering rate.
The numbers from Regina police suggest licence plate thefts have nearly doubled this year compared to the same time last year. From January to April 2015, 56 licence plates were stolen. This year, from January to April 15, 107 licence plates have been taken.
Regina police conducted a campaign last year asking the public to be aware of licence plate thefts.
Staff Sgt. Paul Tate with the Regina Police Service said it’s difficult to say whether there is more thefts or people are reporting it more. Tate added the public’s increased awareness likely has something to do with the numbers they are seeing this year.
“There is more activity where vehicles are being likely stolen and these fraudulent plates or stolen plates are being put on them,” explained Tate.
Tate is reminding the public to conduct regular checks to make sure their licence plates are secure and that the correct plate is on their vehicle. If your plate has been removed or replace, report it immediately.
Some people might be wondering what the motivation is for others to do this. Tate said one reason is to fool the police.
“If somebody steals a red Ford and puts a red Ford licence plate on it, that plate may not come up stolen, whereas the original plate on the vehicle stolen would be reported stolen along with the vehicle.”
