It’s official. Maurice Price has retired from football.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders released a statement Thursday afternoon confirming the receiver has finished his football career.
General manager and head coach Chris Jones said he was surprised and disappointed by the decision.
“We were given no indication when we acquired Maurice and negotiated a new contract that he may not continue playing,” Jones said in a release.
The 30-year-old Price was acquired by the Saskatchewan Roughriders through a trade with the Ottawa Redblacks in January. He inked a contract extension not long after.
The extension included a signing bonus – which Price will keep even if he doesn’t play a single game in the green and white in 2016.
Price played 18 games with the Ottawa Redblacks last year, which included 58 receptions for 603 yards and one touchdown.
Before landing in Ottawa, Price played three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.
“As a team we will continue to move forward with our free agent camps and work through the CFL Draft. An opportunity has opened up for another player,” Jones said.
