When Doves Cry: Fans react to the death of music icon Prince

“So this is what it sounds like when doves cry.” The lyrics of Prince seem to be a perfect expression for millions of fans mourning the death of yet another musical icon.

In Saskatchewan, fans are recalling the concert he played to a packed house at the Conexus Arts Centre on June 3, 2002.

“The concert was the most intimate and really profound concert I’ve ever been to. I’ve been to many, many, many concerts – it was the best concert I’ve ever seen… ever,” said said Danielle. “He really was a musical genius and wow could he play the guitar.”

Danielle said she went to the concert with her sisters and sat in the second row. As a musician and a music teacher, she noted that Prince has always been her musical role model.

“He has taken a lot of different influences and put them into his very own sound, like nobody could sound like Prince, they just couldn’t because he was just so very unique,” Danielle explained.

She said she loved how he used real musicians instead of relying on automated sounds.

Robert Scott remembers that it was the first concert he paid $100 per ticket for, but he loved it so much he was willing to buy tickets again for the next night in Saskatoon, which was cancelled.

“People stood up when he came on stage and never sat down throughout the whole concert,” he said. “I’ve been to a lot of concerts in my life and that one still is hands down the most fantastic one I’ve ever been to.”

Scott said Prince made music that just made you happy and he can always remember where he was at certain times when his songs came on.

“Of all the artists that were out there, he was the one that spoke to our generation more than most,” Scott commented.

As the news of his death was confirmed, Prince became a trending topic, with people tweeting videos and memes about the music icon.
