Ward 8 residents will be without a councillor until October after Saskatoon city council voted against holding a byelection in the riding Monday.
The seat became empty after Eric Olauson stepped down following his election to the Saskatchewan Legislature in Saskatoon-University on April 4.
A byelection would take a minimum of 10 weeks to prepare and would cost an estimated $50,000, according to city administration who opposed the idea.
A summer election might also add to already low municipal election turn out and make it hard to find polling stations.
Under city bylaws, council can opt out of holding a byelection in a ward that becomes vacant during an election year.
Ward 8 includes the Greystone Heights, Brevoort, College Park and Briarwood neighbourhoods along with the East Development Area.
Mayor Don Atchison will take over responsibilities to represent the ward until the Oct. 26 municipal election.
