A 27-year-old man facing charges in the death of an eight-month-old girl made his first court appearance on Friday.
A judge imposed a publication ban protecting the identity of the girl, which also prevents naming the accused.
He’s charged with manslaughter, failure to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing death.
The girl died on Jan. 29. At that time, officers who responded to a call of an unresponsive baby girl at an apartment on the 100 block of Avenue P South charged the man with breaching a conditional sentence order.
Police laid the new charges this week following the results of an autopsy, and consultations with the Crown prosecutor’s office.
In a media release Thursday, police said the girl died of asphyxiation and accused the man of being responsible for her death.
The man will remain in custody ahead of a bail hearing scheduled for May 20.
