A playoff hockey game proved to be much more than a sporting event for a father and son from Saskatoon.
Tuesday night’s game between the San Jose Sharks and host St. Louis Blues was full of fan support for Wyatt and his dad Gerry Nelson.
The pair has become known in Saskatoon for the special bond they share through hockey. Gerry, who is blind, brought Wyatt up to be a fan of the hometown Blades. In turn, the 12-year-old provides play-by-play commentary of the games for his father.
Recently, the NHL featured the pair in an emotional spotlight video, which prompted the St. Louis Blues to do something incredible.
The Blues general manager, Doug Armstrong, and radio analyst Kelly Chase, a former Saskatoon Blade, called the Nelsons and invited both of them to game two of the Western Conference final.
What’s more, Wyatt was given a chance to go live on the air during the game.
The news spread quickly on social media, with fans from across North America cheering on the Nelsons.
The family’s visit was documented by the Blues on Twitter, and included a stop at the pre-game press conference, a personal meeting with some broadcast legends and finally –the big moment going live.
These pictures certainly tell the story better than anyone can – way to go Wyatt and Gerry!
