A man pushing himself to do a walk of over 2000 kilometres in support of Fort McMurray stopped in Saskatoon on Friday.
Stanley Barkman said he was shocked at the images he saw on the news of wildfires devastating the area around Fort McMurray, forcing over 80,000 to flee.
“People are losing their homes, I just felt like I wanted to do something. I’m the kind of person that likes to help. Especially those in need,” he said.
With not much in the way of rescources to donate to the cause, Barkman decided to use his feet, challenging himself to walk from Sioux Lookout, Ont. all the way to Fort McMurray — a distance of some 2080 kilometres. He’s been documenting the trip on Facebook.
Barkman estimated he’d racked-up over 1200 kilometres since he started walking on May 9. He said he hopes to arrive in Fort McMurray sometime in the week of June 20th.
He said he simply wants to do what he can, despite not having any direct personal connection to Fort McMurray.
“I’ve never even heard of the town until it was on the news and I do not know anybody over there, never heard of anybody over there,” he said.
On Friday, Barkman made it to Saskatoon, where the Brainsport running store gave him and his travelling companions shoes to help them on their journey.
