Regina students take a unique field trip

A new generation is getting to learn a little about one of Regina’s most famous landmarks before it’s demolished.

Grade 1, 5 and 6 students from St. Francis School chased balls and ran around on Taylor Field at Mosaic Stadium Thursday morning, wrapping up five weeks of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame school program.

“You can imagine when the kids come in and we say ‘OK, we’re going to do math’ and there’s a collective groan and then it’s “OK, out on the field, we’re going to do math’ and then the interest has peaked. It’s all uphill from there,” said Sheila Kelly, executive director of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.

She said every single subject in every single grade can be transferred over to the sporting world.

This particular program taught kids about the history of Mosaic Stadium. They got the chance to get physical activity. They also learned about measurements.

“We learned about numbers on the field and stuff,” said Dawson Gabrielle in Grade 1.

“They’re smashing it down. They’re making a new one,” said Grade 5 student Marshall Bailey on what he learned about Mosaic Stadium. “Rugby was first played on this field.”

“This place is going to be missed a lot,” said Grade 5 student Sundrah De La Cruz.

Organizers said it was a unique program for the children to make one last memory of the field, especially since the venue with so many memories for so many people won’t be standing for much longer. It’s all part of the final year of celebrations at Mosaic during the farewell season.
