To mark National Aboriginal Day, Historica Canada has released an impactful new Heritage Minute about Canada’s residential school system.
The video focuses on the case of Charlie Wenjack, who died of hunger and exposure after escaping his Ontario residential school in 1966.
His death gained national attention, and led to the first inquiry into the treatment of children in the residential school system.
In the video’s final shot, the words “part of our heritage” is superimposed below Wenjack’s body.
This is the 84th Heritage Minute done by Historica Canada.
Other topics have included the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and the 1976 Canada Cup.
