It may have been brief but it was certainly an exciting day for dozens of people who turned out to Government House in Regina to see Prince Edward and Sophie.
Their Royal Highnesses held a public walkabout outside of the building where fans of the royal couple lined up in the warm sun behind a red velvet rope in anticipation of the meet and greet.
Some wore hats, specifically fascinators, while others held welcome signs. Some even tried to present the Earl and Countess of Wessex with gifts.
It worked for four-year-old Liam Riemer.
“I gave them my flower,” said the youngster.
“Liam was super excited to meet the prince. He even didn’t give the princess a flower because he said it was specifically for the prince,” laughed his mom Danielle. “She was very nice about it and said ‘Oh, that’s so nice’.”
Their family usually makes a point of coming to see royalty.
“My mom and I always come to these events and we just like coming and seeing. We’re royals through and through. We love everything that they represent and do.”
Prince Edward and Sophie tried to exchange pleasantries with as many people as possible in a tight window before Sophie had to fly out to Edmonton.
“They seem like they’re very great and very nice. They stopped and talked with a lot of people,” Danielle said.
Jane Scrimgeour also came to see the royals, especially to meet Her Royal Highness for the first time.
“She is charming and very beautiful. A true English rose,” she described. “She met my expectations and then some. I obviously do not know her personally but she just seems like such a lovely lady.”
Earlier in the day, the Countess of Wessex met with Mounties at the RCMP Heritage Centre.
Prince Edward handed out the Duke of Edinburgh Awards inside Government House, just one of many events held with him there. He’s scheduled to tour a local farm and meet with members of the agricultural industry during a private function Thursday night before flying off to Calgary Friday morning.
The royal couple was on hand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Regina’s Globe Theatre. They attended a gala event for the theatre on Wednesday evening at the Conexus Arts Centre.
