Regina may have escaped the worst of the heavy rain, but all of those puddles could create a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The latest mosquito count released by the City of Regina showed an average of 10 mosquitoes caught in 12 different traps last week.
Russell Eirich is the manager of forestry, horticulture and pest control for the city and he says the mosquito populations are only about 25 per cent of the historical average for this time of year.
“That said though, we’ve gotten a lot of rain and we expect the numbers to climb over the next week or so,” Eirich said.
He noted that it usually takes about a week between when the heavy rain ends and when people start to notice a spike in mosquito numbers.
“Some of the things we need to try to do right now is to simply try to drain the rain that’s in the back yards,” Eirich said as a reminder to homeowners. “So if you’ve got any items that can catch and hold water, that’s really going to aggravate it a lot.”
City crews are monitoring standing bodies of water around the city and treating them for mosquito larvae.
