A familiar name has been added to the race to be mayor in Regina’s civic election this fall.
Tony Fiacco has announced his candidacy, the first contender to go up against incumbent Michael Fougere. Fiacco, is the older brother to former mayor Pat, who served from 2000 to 2012.
But that, he insists, is where the similarity ends.
“We are cut from the same cloth, but we don’t always agree or disagree, we don’t always think about, this isn’t about Pat and the name, I am going out to forge Tony Fiacco”, he maintained. “Moving forward, we look at doing things differently and hopefully better.”
Fiacco won’t reveal his platform but contends it will have a focus on business development.
In opening remarks made in front of family at the Italian Club, Fiacco stated he wanted to put his name forward after seeing an article that put Moose Jaw and Saskatoon in the top 10 places in Canada to do business. Regina wasn’t on the list.
“That is a problem I think,” Fiacco said.
As a long-time resident of North Central Fiacco also wants to focus to find solutions for that neighbourhood.
“That situation is brutal and we need to do things to change the way of thinking of the residents, we need to do stuff for the youth and get them going in a new direction.”
Fiacco has been a candidate for the Saskatchewan Party in previous provincial elections. This is the first time he’s run at the municipal level.
