The Cathedral neighbourhood will stay as-is for now after an application for a new building at 13th Avenue and Elphinstone Street was denied Monday night.
The application was brought before City Council, but 21 delegates spoke against it.
It was to be a four-storey, mixed-use building that would replace a house and strip-mall currently at that location.
The meeting went into the wee-hours of the morning as council discussed the idea.
Those against the idea said the building didn’t fit with the neighbourhood and didn’t agree with a home being torn down to build a parking lot.
“I and other members of council wanted to try to find a compromise between the two extremes, if you will, and then if you find that you can live with it but you’re a bit upset, maybe it will work. We didn’t get to that point,” explained Mayor Michael Fougere.
City Council voted to defeat the application for the building.
