Humboldt man started taxi business after son reached legal drinking age

There shouldn’t be any excuses for drinking and driving in Humboldt now that the city has two cab companies to choose from.

Papa’s Taxi opened in June after Steve Schneider’s older son became legal drinking age.

“I said, he can’t get home safely, so I will start this,” Schneider explained.

With more than a dozen bars or drinking establishments in town, Schneider saw a void he thought he could fill.

“People have been super happy that I am here. Now they can plan out weekends and they are excited about it,” Schneider said.

He has been welcomed by the bars in town and has even done a couple of trips in to Saskatoon for customers.

Saskatchewan has the highest rate of drinking and driving in Canada. In fact a recent poll by Mainstreet Analytics showed one in five people agree that it is OK to drink and drive so long as it is for a short distance and on a quiet road. A larger portion of respondents who answered yes were from rural Saskatchewan rather than Saskatoon or Regina.

Options are more limited for taxis or designated driver services in rural towns than the cities.
