Tips for Saskatoon drivers as a new school year gets underway

Saskatoon drivers are being told to make sure they’re up-to-date on the rules of the road as kids return to school.

Police reminded drivers on Tuesday school zone speed limits will back in effect on Thursday morning.

The zones will be active Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until June 30.

A photo radar camera will rotate through five different school zones to help ensure drivers stick to the 30 km/h speed limit.

“Even though there may not be police in (the area), the opportunity to get a ticket if you’re speeding is still there,” said Kelsie Fraser, Saskatoon police spokeswoman.

But there are other rules to be mindful of.

For example, if you find you are going the wrong way while in a school zone, you won’t be able to reverse course immediately.
 
U-Turns can result in a $50 fine under legislation that came into effect in 2013.

Also, drivers are not required to stop for a school bus while children are being picked up or dropped off.

“It’s a matter of just slowing down,” said Edna Ewaniuk, bus driver with First Student.

“School children sometimes rush out quick. You have to expect that,” Ewaniuk added.

The 31-year veteran said some responsibility also lies with parents.

“The kids all want to be first on the bus,” she said. “I always tell the parents to teach them to stay back so many feet until the bus stops.”

In the end, Ewaniuk wants to see a successful year where the worst she has to do is check for sleeping children.

“I just hope everyone has a nice, safe year.”
