As water continues to rise in Manitou Beach, Sask. the province is looking to raise barriers to keep it at bay.
The Saskatchewan government says they’re spending $3.9 million to raise berms by one metre along the shore of Little Manitou Lake. The landlocked body of water has been breaking water level records since 2007, threatening the resort town and Easter Seals camp with flooding.
Some business owners have seen a drop in visitors, with many citing worries over the situation.
“We have about 10 feet too much water in the lake,” Danceland Co-Owner Millie Strueby told CKOM News last month. “Evaporation won’t (bring the level down) anymore.”
Mayor Gerry Worobec told The Canadian Press they’ve already placed temporary barriers over the existing berms.
Those structures are being overtaken by waves on windy days.
While raising the berms is a temporary solution, Worobec said a plan to divert water away from the lake is what’s needed to provide long-term security.
