Thirty-six classic cars made their way through Saskatoon Friday evening to honour a man killed while driving a vintage VW Beetle.
Dub Union 306 organized the special ‘Slow Cruz’ to pay their respect to the 70-year-old man, who was killed when his beetle collided head on with a vehicle that had crossed the median on Circle Drive near 108th Street on Wednesday. A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the collision, but police have not laid charges related to the crash.
Organizers were surprised by the number of drivers that participated in the tribute.
“I only got 20 flags for a good turnout,” said Dub Union Member Beverley Stroeder. “I’m really happy with this.”
The vehicles included vintage beetles, “type 2” vans, and even some modern editions as nearly 100 people piled in to take part in the convoy. The colourful collection wove its way down Spadina Avenue before winding up and over Broadway Bridge, eventually ending at the Dairy Queen on 8th Street.

Many drivers at the event didn’t know the victim, but wanted to show their support.
“It’s mostly about the family,” said Stroeder. “Just to show them we support them in their time of grief.”
The man and his family have not been identified.
The club typically holds these leisurely drives throughout the summer months, but several drivers told CKOM News Friday night was the largest showing ever.
