City of Regina reveals Transportation and Parking plan for new Mosaic Stadium

The City of Regina revealed the Transportation and Parking Plan for new Mosaic Stadium.

The plan will see a free public transit system which the public can use to get to the stadium to avoid parking.

Executive Director of City Services, Kim Onrait, said the city is really trying to change the way fans get to the game.

“We’d like to try and change the behaviours of people attending major events and transportation by transit is one of the ways to do that,” Onrait said.

Ozzie Tetlock has been going to rider games for 25 years and he believes the transit system is an improvement over the current situation.

“We can go to a mall, and it’s relatively easy to get to the mall, and it’s an easy ride there and they’re going to drop us off at the door (at the new stadium) and pick us up at the door which is really great,” Tetlock said.

However, not everyone is convinced the City of Regina will be able to convince enough people to use the transit system.

Ruth Fyfe said she is worried about parking around the new stadium and how it’s not an improvement over the current situation.

“Even right now, the parking’s terrible and this is just pretty well as bad as the old parking, or the parking we have now,” Fyfe said

The plan will see no parking along 9th Avenue between Albert Street and the stadium. Elphinstone Street between Dewdney Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive will be an Auto Restricted Area.

A test event on Oct. 1,which will see the University of Regina Rams take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies at the new stadium, will determine how well the parking plan will work. Changes to the plan may be made after public feedback after the event.

For the current season, Rider fans will be able to get a free ride to and from home games. Starting Saturday, Sept. 24, people will be able to hitch a ride on the Football Express from Normanview Shopping Centre, Northgate Shopping Centre, Victoria Square Mall and Southland Mall.
