Man dead after police standoff struggled with drugs: family friend

Twenty-eight year old Joshua Megeney, of Medicine Hat, Alta. died Thursday after a nearly eight-hour standoff in Saskatoon’s Mount Royal area.

Now a person close to his girlfriend, Brooke Marshall, told 650 CKOM he was struggling with addiction issues.

Mandee spoke with 650 CKOM Saturday on the condition her last name wasn’t used “he was working on getting better with his drug addiction,” she said.

“He was very kind to Brooke and treated her well.”

Mandee said Megeney was even good with Brooke’s daughters.

“He was non-abusive and non-threatening.” she said

Officers found Megeney holding a gun as they searched an Avenue Q house after receiving a report about a break-in.

 Shots were fired when police made initial contact with Megeney, who was located in a bedroom. It’s still unclear whether he was shot by police.
 
 Officers found Megeney’s body when they re-entered the home around 4:30 p.m.

 Mandee said “you never know what makes a person break into a home or what made the situation what it was,” she said.

 She believes whatever happened that day could likely have been prevented.

“He should have got more help for his drug addiction or reached out to the police.”
