Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is saying the plan proposed by Hillary Clinton would be more effective than the announced carbon tax.
“When I take a look at Hillary Clinton’s climate change plan, I wish Justin Trudeau was a little more like Hillary Clinton,” Wall said.
Clinton’s plan focuses on investing in new technologies, including carbon capture and sequestration, and makes no mention of a price on carbon.
Premier Wall had been adamant in his stance against the Trudeau government’s carbon tax plan. He believes that any action taken by the national government should take into account if it will affect Canada’s competitiveness with the United States.
“What the Prime Minister announced unilaterally in the House while the environment ministers were meeting in Montreal risks Canada’s competitiveness within North America.”
Wall said the strategies they will be proposing when they present their white paper on climate change to the Regina Chamber of Commerce are similar to those proposed by Clinton.
“She talks about climate resilience, that’s adaptation. That’s adapting to climate change that’s happening right now and it is. The impacts are real now,” Wall said.
Wall does not think the carbon tax is the best way to approach climate change.
“I believe that technological investments and moving to renewables, as we’re trying to do in Saskatchewan, that will actually reduce emissions.”
The premier said they are currently looking at their legal options on the carbon tax.
