The University of Saskatchewan has named former premier Roy Romanow its newest chancellor.
Romanow becomes the 15th chancellor of the university and takes over from Blaine Favel on Nov. 1.
“All of the opportunities in my life flowed from my time at the U of S,” Romanow said in a news release Saturday.
“I never imagined being chancellor, but I will do whatever I can to assist the institution in maintaining and improving its standing as one of the best universities in Canada and beyond.”
Romanow, who led the province from 1991 to 2001 as leader of the Saskatchewan New Democrat Party, has a long connection the university.
During his time on campus, he became involved in student governance, serving as president of the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union from 1960-61.
He earned a bachelor of arts and a law degree from the university, and is currently a Senior Policy Fellow in the College of Arts and Science.
The chancellor presides over convocation ceremonies, chairs the University Senate and serves on the Board of Governors.
