Toronto Blue Jays fans – and there are more and more of them every day – keep talking about 2004.
2004. 2004. Remember 2004? When the Boston Red Sox lost the first three games of their ALCS against the New York Yankees and were trailing in the ninth inning of Game 4. The Red Sox tied that game off all-world closer Mariano Rivera and won in extra innings with a home run by David Ortiz.
Ortiz hit a game-winning single in the 14th inning of Game 5. Curt Schilling’s bloody sock victory (before he became an outspoken, right-wing) won Game 6 for Boston. And the Red Sox blew out the Yankees in Game 7 to become the only baseball team to rally from a 3-0 deficit and win a best-of-seven series.
Inspired by their team’s 5-1 victory Tuesday against Cleveland, fans think the Blue Jays can pull off the same feat in their ALCS. Cleveland is running out of starting pitchers and Toronto’s bats seem to be coming alive.
Still, it’s a longshot for the Blue Jays just to get a seventh game. Of 35 teams that fell behind 3-0, Boston is the only one to force a seventh game. And the Red Sox had David Ortiz.
