I’m not sure why I remember this so vividly, but over two decades ago Bombers kicker Trevor Kennerd was being interviewed by Dave Hodge on the old CFN network. Kennerd said he wished the CFL would remove the divisions and line the teams up, top to bottom, for the playoffs.
The league’s playoff format triggers an age-old debate that seems to rage in the markets where CFL teams have just missed out on a post-season spot.
Guess what? The discussion is happening in Saskatchewan.
It’s important to keep the divisions in place and keep the current format. (Remember this, strong fourth place in either division can cross over.)
East and west divisions give the CFL the best chance to engage the entire nation leading up to the Grey Cup game each year.
The best way to avoid being the victim of an imperfect playoff format is to play consistent football from June to October.
