A state of crisis has been called after four young girls, ages 10 to 14, took their own lives in northern Saskatchewan.
FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said a request has been made to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“We’ve sent communication to Prime Minister Trudeau and his MPs,” Cameron said. “We’re requesting a face-to-face meeting with the Prime Minister and others to really sit down and have an immediate investment.”
Cameron also said it’s important children have access to cultural and recreational activities to ensure no more youth commit suicide.
The girls – two from Stanley Mission, one from La Ronge, and one from Deschambault Lake – took their own lives this month.
“Some of our First Nations have lost their identity,” Cameron said. “So it’s about recapturing and reinvigorating that identity.”
Cameron says whether it’s a state of emergency or if it’s a state of crisis, both need to be addressed immediately.
Cameron also said they are in search for a long-term plan when it comes to tackling the issue. Cameron said “there is always room for improvement” when it comes to what is being done in Northern communities and that everyone is committed to ensure no more youth is lost. He said it will take the involvement of the governments, parents, elders.
“When the voices of the youth are heard, when they acknowledge and are communicating with our leadership with many other, then we will see that we are reaching out.”
