Justin Cox is the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ best rookie this season and could become the team’s nominee in balloting for CFL awards conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada, but because of his criminal background at least two local voters won’t be voting for him.
It’s an admirable stance by the voters, who have decided to select someone who hasn’t been arrested two times for domestic violence.
Cox’s first arrest came in 2014, when he was playing football for Mississippi State and police arrived at a burglary scene to find his girlfriend with a head injury. The university suspended him for three games, including the Orange Bowl. In 2015, while trying out for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, Cox was arrested for breaking into a residence, burglary and again assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Kansas City released him the next day.
Cox, 23, has played 14 games for the Roughriders. As a starting defensive back he has made 42 defensive tackles and four interceptions. He’s better than the Riders’ other rookie-of-the-year candidates, receivers Caleb Holley or Ricky Collins. But a guy with TWO domestic assault arrests doesn’t deserve any type of honour.
