Rows and rows and rows of poppies were displayed at the launch of the campaign on Friday morning.
“You’re helping Veterans that served in the wars by supporting the poppy campaign,” said chair of the campaign, Diane Robson. “It’s not just helping armed forces. Anybody (police, firefighters, paramedics) who looks after the public is supported by the poppy campaign.”
Over 20 Veterans, politicians, and supporters gathered at the Market Mall food court.
“We need to remember the lives lost and the sacrifice made by great Veterans,” Robson said.
A young bagpiper played as a lady from the Legion recited a poem in honour of the Veterans.
“The poppy is supposed to go over the heart, but it’s OK if somebody wants to wear it on their ball caps,” she said.

Poppy etiquette is to wear the poppy from the last Friday of Oct. until Remembrance Day.
Robson said this year they’re looking back at history to remember 100 years ago that the battle of Beaumont Hamel was fought during the first world war by the Newfoundland Regiment.
“Most of that regiment was wounded or killed which was tragic,” she said. “I want people to remember that war is not a good thing.”
Veteran John Schoen was part of the Sherbrooke Regiment (world war two) and played in the band, he was also at the poppy campaign launch.
“If I hadn’t just been in the band I don’t think I would’ve survived,” he said. “I have a poppy that hangs in my room and I always reflect on my friends who were lost.”
Poppies will be available at several locations throughout the city.
