A solid majority of people in our closest neighbour to the south, North Dakota, likely were celebrating Monday night when Donald Trump was declared winner of the election.
More than 64 per cent of people in North Dakota voted for Trump.
Jill Schramm is a staff writer for the Minot Daily News. She said the Trump support wasn’t a surprise.
“North Dakota traditionally has gone for the Republican candidate, and I think there was a real negative feeling toward Hillary Clinton in North Dakota because some of her positions on issues, they don’t resonate with the rural area, whole producing area.”
It wasn’t all anti-Clinton feelings though – Schramm explained there were a fair number of people who support Trump, but also those who may not support him but do support his policies.
“For instance, he would be appointing to the Supreme Court and they’re concerned about that. They’re concerned about some of the policy issues Democrats have versus Republicans, they support the Republican policies and they feel Trump will at least follow through with those.”
Schramm said she spoke to one Trump supporter who is a businessman, and said he was supporting Trump because Trump is a businessman as well.
While some Americans have said they’d move to Canada if Trump won, and the Canadian immigration website crashed on election night, Schramm said she’d only heard people say it as a joke.
