Update: Missing 7-year-old girl found dead in Choiceland home

RCMP have confirmed that they have found the body of seven-year-old Nia Eastman, who was the subject of Thursday’s Amber Alert. 

Police said she was picked up from school on Tuesday by her father Adam Jay Eastman, 45.

She was supposed to be brought back to her mother’s home by 7 p.m. that night.

According to RCMP, Nia’s body was found in a home in Choiceland at 12:45 p.m on Thursday, about a hour northeast of Prince Albert.

“This was not the outcome all of us were hoping for and our thoughts are with the family and communities,” Insp. Jennifer Ebert said. “Our investigators are working diligently to determine exactly what took place,” Ebert said. “At this point in the investigation, there is no indication anyone else was involved in Nia’s death and we are not seeking any suspects.”

According to a provincial court document, Eastman was facing an assault charge. 

A Nipawin peace officer said he believed Eastman committed an assault on Crystal Eastman, Nia’s mother, on Aug. 23 in Choiceland.

The court had no record of convictions against Adam Eastman.

A business owner in the small community of Choiceland, who did not want her name used, says Adam Eastman had been renting a house there and dropped in to talk to her pretty much every day.

The woman says Eastman was having mental health issues and it wasn’t a good situation.

A tragic events response team was brought to the school on Thursday where attended grade one classes in Choiceland.

“Schools are families and so you have that kind of response when you have a tragic event like this,” said Rob McKay, school superintendent.
 
He said counsellors will be there for staff and students through next week.

Troubling social media posts

On a Facebook page belonging to Jay Eastman, which appears to be the same Adam Jay Eastman, there are some posts that could be considered disturbing.

On Tuesday afternoon, a day before Nia was to be returned to her mother, there was a photo posted of the girl and an unidentified woman with the super-imposed caption “My World.” 

On Wednesday, the page’s cover photo was changed to a picture of a skull and crossbones with the slogan: “Leave me alone. I’ve had enough.”

A post from June 21 also showed blood splatter.
