Mark Messier is her distant cousin, but this Sask. hockey product is carving her own path.
The last span of the city’s old Traffic Bridge will soon be taken down and carted away.
Crews have spent the last week building a berm underneath the remaining span on which they will begin dismantling the structure.
No explosives will be used this time – instead, the span will be removed and lowered down to the berm where it will reduced to smaller portions and trucked away.
Work is set to begin 7 a.m. Thursday and is expected to last about two weeks.
As for the last two piers, their upper portions will be demolished. Fresh concrete will then be used to build new piers on top of the 1907 footings.
The new Traffic Bridge will allow drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to cross the South Saskatchewan River.
Once complete, it will resemble the original bridge, but will be wider to accommodate larger vehicles like fire trucks.
The new Traffic Bridge is slated to open October 2018.
