In a 3DownNation article from Drew Edwards, the CFL’s vice president of football Glen Johnson admitted that calls made in last Sunday’s east semi-final did “not meet the standard” of the Canadian Football League.
One of the calls was the much talked about hit that Edmonton’s Odell Willis delivered on Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros late in the fourth quarter.
Tiger-Cats coach Kent Austin was unsuccessful in a challenge, hoping to get a roughing the passer penalty. He did not. Johnson said replay official Jeff Harbin erred by not upholding the challenge.
There is no question that CFL officiating, including replay officials, can be better.
I admire Johnson for his honesty, but also wonder why he would be this specific when it comes to the calls in question.
This gives the opportunity for CFL haters to point out how much superior NFL officials are, which – if you know anything about football – you know, they aren’t.
Bad calls, even those from replay officials, aren’t contained to one border.
