Huskies women's basketball unveil national title after 17-year wait

It took University of Saskatchewan women’s basketball head coach Lisa Thomaidis 17-years, but she finally got to watch a national title rise to the rafters on Saturday night.

“When you work for 17-years and finally get what you’ve been working for it’s pretty special,” Thomaidis said.

“You dream to win a national title in this business and when I first started here there were many days and night’s I thought we would never make playoffs. So to finally get from the bottom of Canada to the top was supremely rewarding.”

The Huskies clinched the win over the Ryerson Rams 85-71 in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports championship game in Fredericton, N.B. on Mar. 20, 2016.

“It was a historic moment and so special,” Thomaidis said.

“We knew we were the best team there and we just had to prove it.”

Thomaidis said it was a huge honor to have the alumni present the rings to the ladies.

“Every single person who presented the rings had a part to do with the championship,” she said.

“They’ve been the building blocks over the years, so it was really important to recognize them tonight (Saturday).”

The Huskies swept the Brandon Bobcats over the weekend 68-64 and 80-50.
