'He was amazing:' Mother remembers son killed at construction site

Tributes are pouring in on social media for a young construction worker killed in a workplace accident in Saskatoon Wednesday morning.
 
Austyn Schenstead, 19, died after being struck by a large piece of concrete that fell off the back of a truck in a back alley.

The accident happened while a crew was working on a city sound wall project on Tache Crescent in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood.

Rebeccah McFarland, Schenstead’s mother, asked for prayers for her son and the people working with him in a Facebook post.
 
“Today was the hardest day our family has ever endured,” she wrote.
 
“Anyone that had the opportunity to know him, knew he was amazing.”
 
In her online tribute, McFarland described her son as prankster who always wanted to see other’s smile.
 
“He loved scaring the crap out of me and playing pranks.”
 
McFarland said Schenstead’s friends and family meant everything to him, adding there was rarely a time he missed a family gathering.
 
“He’d give you the shirt off his back, unless it was a Flames jersey.”
 
“He truly did make my world a better place. He came into my world unexpected and filled it with love, joy and happiness I never knew existed.”
 
Occupational Health and Safety and the provincial coroner are investigating the death.
